Influenza has spread east to a total
of 36 U.S. states with widespread outbreaks, a 50 percent
increase from last week, according to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
Rhode Island and 15 other states east of the Mississippi River
have reported influenza cases over widespread areas, an agency
report said. The flu season began early this year, in October.
The season usually begins in December and an average of 36,000
people die of complications in the U.S. each year.
