Johnson & Wales University

Providence Business News is pleased to welcome John J. Bowen as the keynote speaker for the 2011 Business Excellence Awards. Mr. Bowen was elected president of Johnson & Wales University in July 2004, and was given the titles of university chancellor and chief executive officer in 2010. He also has served as a member of the board of trustees since 1992.
Mr. Bowen’s leadership has been a key element in JWU’s success during his 37-year tenure at the university. Today he oversees more than 17,000 students and 2,000 employees at four domestic campuses in Providence, Charlotte, N.C., Denver and North Miami, Fla.
Mr. Bowen began his career at JWU in 1974 as a faculty member in the then newly established culinary arts program. Early on he helped reaffirm the university’s focus on career education by establishing the career development office. This critical element of the school’s resource toolbox supports the university’s mission, with the result an outstanding employment rate for JWU graduates and the brand promise of Best Fit Employment.
A dedicated community leader, Mr. Bowen donates his time and expertise to a number of board affiliations, including the president’s leadership council of Save The Bay, the governing boards of Crossroads Rhode Island and the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, and the board of directors for the Rhode Island Commodores. He also currently serves as a bank director for The Washington Trust Company, and previously served as a bank director and member of the advisory council for Citizens Bank of Rhode Island.
