NABsys Inc. has acquired GeneSpectrum Inc. in an all-stock transaction, combining the two firms’ resources to develop a platform for sequencing human genomic DNA at a markedly reduced cost, the two companies announced Dec. 22.
The combined company, NABsys, will pursue a proprietary “hybridization-assisted nanopore sequencing” DNA sequencing platform.

“The data and expertise that GeneSpectrum has accumulated in the areas of probe design and DNA hybridization will be invaluable to the sequencing platform that NABsys is pursuing,” said Dr. Barrett Bready, CEO of NABsys.
According to the National Institutes of Health, it currently costs on the order of $10 million to sequence a single person’s genome. NABsys said its goal is to reduce the cost to less than $1,000 per genome, which would allow DNA sequencing to be used as a clinical diagnostic tool.
“Companies realizing dramatic improvements in DNA sequencing have achieved significant commercial success,” said Richard G. Horan, senior managing director of the Slater Technology Fund. “NABsys shows great promise in its pursuit of this goal.”
