PROVIDENCE — Nestor Traffic Systems, Inc. (NTS) and the University of Rhode Island Transportation Center (URITC) are teaming up to study red light running in Rhode Island.
According to NTS, an affiliate of Providence-based Nestor, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has awarded a contract to URI to research and document the magnitude of the red light running problem throughout the state. NTS said it will provide its video-based CrossingGuardVIP (TM) program to collect red light violation data, allowing URI to analyze and identify the rate and frequency of such violations. RIDOT may then use the information to work on improving intersection safety.

The study is also being supported by Amica Mutual Insurance, which has contributed $100,000. The study begins in May and ends with a final report to RIDOT by the end of October, NTS said.
