New director of certification at R.I. Dept. of Education

Education Commissioner Peter McWalters has announced that Paulajo Gaines has been hired as the new director of the Office of Teacher Certification at the R.I. Department of Education (RIDE), according to statement released by RIDE last week.

In her new position, according to the statement, Gaines is responsible for leading and managing the statewide system for the approvals of education-preparation programs at state institutions of higher education, for certifying all elementary school and secondary school teachers, and recertification of teachers in the state.

Gaines holds a masters of science in education from the University of New England, and she is working toward a Ph.D. in a joint program offered by the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College.

Most recently, Gaines has been a lecturer at URI’s School of Education and the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, in which she also serves as an assistant professor, the statement said.
