Number of Brown applicants jumps 11 percent

Brown University said the number of applications for the class of 2009 jumped 11 percent to 16,907, allowing the Providence-based school to be more selective in its admissions.

The school accepted 2,463 students, or 14.6 percent of the applicants, the lowest percentage in Brown’s history, spokesman Mark Nickel said.

The number of students who ultimately enter the school next fall probably will be about 1,440, as some will go to other programs, Nickel said.

Of the students accepted this year, 48 percent were men and 52 percent were women, Nickel said. Last year, men represented just under 49 percent and women just over 51 percent.

Nickel said this year’s potential students come from all 50 states and 58 countries outside the U.S.
