Longtime patrons of the bakery have left notes taped to the door wishing the owners, the Kaplan family, well. Some patrons have offered to help the owners, Daniel and Lois Kaplan, get the bakery up and running again.

Available for sale on Thursday will be the trade name of Barney’s Bakery, the list of customers served by the Kaplans over the years and the familiar recipes.

“It’s sad to see a Rhode Island institution like Barney’s come to an end after 18 years of service,” said Corio. “Our function now is to recoup as much as we can to aid the Kaplan family.”

SJ Corio Co. has handled auctions, appraisals and liquidations in southeastern New England for 20 years. The company deals mostly in commercial industrial equipment.

SJ Corio is also one of a few auction companies in the area that utilize a wireless handheld computer that transmits the sales in real-time from the auction floor to the on-premise business office.
