Pentagon officials are considering major cuts to U.S. weapons programs including the
Army’s Comanche reconnaissance helicopter, made by Boeing Co. and
United Technologies Corp., the Wall Street Journal reported.
Stryker armored vehicles manufactured by General Dynamics
Corp. and General Motors Corp., are also on the list of potential
cutbacks, the Journal said, citing Pentagon documents and
unidentified people familiar with the plans.

Stephen Cambone, who is reviewing the Pentagon’s purchasing
plans, is also recommending delaying or canceling the Navy’s CVNX
aircraft carrier, which would affect Northrop Grumman Corp’s
shipbuilding division, the Journal reported. Cambone couldn’t be
reached for comment, the Journal reported.
The Pentagon budget is expected to total $460 billion by
fiscal year 2006, compared with $329 billion in fiscal year 2001,
with much of the increase intended for pay, benefits and
operations, the Journal said. The increases won’t compensate for
weapons cuts made during the 1990s and also allow the Pentagon to
modernize and build a missile defense shield, the Journal said.
