Peter Pan Bus Lines – the nation’s largest privately owned intercity bus line, and the parent of Providence-based Bonanza Bus Lines – today announced that all buses from Providence to Boston will now travel to South Station, then on to Logan Airport.

• One-way Saturday and Sunday bus trips between Providence and Boston will cost $5 each way, effective immediately. No additional discounts will apply.
(The midweek price of travel between Providence – either Kennedy Plaza or the Bonanza Bus Lines terminal – and South Station is $7.95 one-way or $14.95 round trip, according to www.peterpanbus.com. Midweek travel between Providence and Logan is $22 each way or $40 round trip.)
• Weekday commuters, for a limited time, will be able to purchase packages of 10 rides for $62; 20 rides for $100; or 40 rides for $150 (packages will have a 30-day validation).
These rates represent up to a 47-percent discount below regular fares, Peter Pan noted. And for most riders, they compare favorably with the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority’s new rates for commuter-rail travel between the cities.
The MBTA’s 25-percent rate hike, which took effect Jan. 1, brings the cost of one-way travel between Providence and South Station to $7.75, and between Attleboro or South Attleboro and South Station to $7.25, according to www.mbta.com. A 50-percent discount on rides or 10-ride tickets is available to students, seniors and the handicapped, with valid I.D.
A one-month MBTA pass good for commuter-rail trips to Providence now costs $250, and a monthly pass good for trips to Attleboro or South Attleboro, $235, according to www.mbta.com. (Those passes also are valid for the MBTA’s local buses in Massachusetts.)

“As a thank-you for a great 2006, our weekend riders can now travel between Providence and Boston for just $5 a ride, and our commuters will be able to take advantage of a frequent-rider discount package,” he said. “We hope that this will also entice others to ride the bus and experience the Peter Pan difference.”
The average bus trip between Providence and Boston takes about 55 minutes, the company said. Many commuters already use Peter Pan buses each day. The route also is popular among students, for weekend travel, Peter Pan said, and is a hassle-free alternative for those visiting the city for an evening show or sporting event.
