American Airlines flight 587 crashed near Queens, New York, as it departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Fox and Cable News Network said.
The Airbus plane crashed about 9:15 a.m. New York time at Beach 129th Street and Newport Avenue in the Rockaway area of Queens, about five miles from the airport, news reports said. There were no immediate reports on the number of passengers on board.
All New York airports and airspace were closed and New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was en route to the site, CNBC said. At least four buildings were reported on fire.

AMR Corp. shares, the parent of American Airlines, fell $2.55, or 14 percent, to $15.58 and traded as low as $13.10.
The Pentagon had no immediate comment. Both Washington airports remain open.
