R.I. DMV extends credential expiration dates prior to computer launch

CRANSTON – R.I. Division of Motor Vehicles Administrator Walter R. Craddock announced on Thursday the validity periods for Rhode Island motor-vehicle credentials with July 2017 expiration dates will extend to Sept. 30, in preparation for the new DMV computer-system overhaul in July.

The identification extension will work nationally, too. The Transportation Security Administration has informed the DMV that individuals carrying Rhode Island credentials that expire during the computer-transition period should not encounter difficulty during domestic air travel, however, it is recommended those with expired credentials bring an extra form of identification.

“I want to thank the General Assembly, and Gov. [Gina M.] Raimondo, for enacting legislation that will give me, and future Division administrators, the authority to accommodate Rhode Islanders whenever DMV operations could be affected by major events such as natural disasters, emergencies or other circumstances, such as the computer system upgrade,” said Craddock.

The new system is expected to launch on July 5. Customers may go to AAA Northeast locations for service, which will assist nonmembers through the DMV’s new computer-system launch period, however AAA access to DMV transactions will be unavailable from July 1-7.
