Hasbro will be major toy licensee for new Films
PAWTUCKET — The Walt Disney Co. and Hasbro Inc announced a broad multi-year corporate alliance encompassing the licensing of Disney film and television properties, and an array of creative initiatives at Disney’s theme parks and resorts. Under terms of the agreement, Hasbro will have the right to develop and market toys and games associated with upcoming Disney-branded film properties, beginning with “Monsters, Inc.,” a Disney/Pixar animated feature film scheduled for release in fall 2001. In addition, Hasbro will become the Official Toy and Game Company for Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris Resort.
Hasbro’s Playskool recalling infants’ toys
PAWTUCKET – The Playskool division of Hasbro announced it was recalling 550,000 toys for infants because small parts on the toys are considered potential choking hazards, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported. The toy is called the Klackeroo and the company reported it had received 10 complaints of small parts detaching from the toy and being found in the mouths of infants and small children. Hasbro is offering a redesigned replacement toy to persons who call 1-888-671-0764 or who register on the company’s Web site, www.hasbro.com.

Navy awards $9.01 million contract to Raytheon Systems
WASHINGTON. D.C. – The Navy Department has awarded Raytheon Systems of Portsmouth a $9,0115,884 million contract for modifying submarine combat control systems for the Los Angeles and Trident class ships now in service. The MK2 system coordinates information from various detection, transmission and navigation devices and controls the launch console and tactical weapons simulator. The improved MK2 system will allow the subs to communicate more effectively with other vessels. The report on the contract award was released by the office of Sen. Jack Reed.
Nazarian Performing Arts Center opens at RIC
PROVIDENCE – The John Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts, named for the president of Rhode Island College, has opened on the campus of the college in the Mt. Pleasant section of the city. Governor Lincoln Almond, members of the Board of Higher Education and other dignitaries participated in dedication ceremonies. Almond said, “As we raise the curtain on this state-of-the-art facility, we pay tribute to a dedicated public servant who has played a starring role in this college’s success story: President John Nazarian.” Nazarian began his service at RIC in 1957 as a math and physics instructor. Over the years he served in various capacities at the college culminating in his selection in 1990 as president of the school. Voters approved a bond issue for the center in 1996 and groundbreaking took place for the $10 million facility in 1998.
Blue Cross says it will keep BlueCHIP for Medicare programs
PROVIDENCE – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island has announced that it will continue to offer its BlueCHIP for Medicate HMO plans throughout Rhode Island in 2001. Ronald A. Battista, president of the company said, in announcing Blue Cross & Blue Shield’s plans, “Although there has been an exodus by health plans from Medicare HMO products across the country and in Rhode Island in 2001, Blue Cross will continue to offer our Rhode Island seniors the ability to choose an alternative to traditional Medicare health coverage.”
$200,000 for athletic fields next to Pawtucket school
PAWTUCKET – Gov. Lincoln Almond announced the award of $200,000 in matching funds for development of athletic fields on land adjacent to the Agnes Little Elementary School in this city. The money comes from the Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund and distributed through the Department of Environmental Management. The governor’s office also announced the state is providing $50,000 to assist this city in buying 8 acres of land next to the 10-Mile River Conservation Area.
Rhode Island to get $2.25 million boost from broad Senate bill
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved the allocation of $2.25 million to Rhode Island for various purposes under an umbrella spending bill for the Departments of Veterans affairs, Housing and Urban Development and assorted independent agencies. Of that amount, $900,000 is assigned to Trinity Repertory Company for use in its planned rehabilitation of a former Citizens Bank building for conversion to a 500-seat theater. Trinity estimates that the total cost of the conversion will be $6 million.
The sum of $600,000 is being set aside for the city of East Providence to fulfill its plan to develop recreational facilities, including walkways, overlooks, access for the handicapped, extensive planting and a parking lot opposite the carousel in the city’s Riverside section on the site of the former Crescent Park.
For the city of Pawtucket $750,000 is being allotted for upgrading the city’s water supply system. The office of Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who advocated the allocations to the committee chairman, Sen.Christopher “Kit” Bond, announced the committee action.
