Gasoline prices in Rhode Island are falling to start the new year, continuing a trend that began nine weeks ago at the start of November, according to AAA Southern New England.
AAA’s Jan. 3 survey of prices in Rhode Island found self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $1.839 per gallon, down 4 cents from last week and 24 cents since beginning to fall back on Nov. 1. Prices haven’t been this low since self-serve unleaded averaged $1.819 in early May of 2004, just prior to the quick jump to all-time record levels in June. The price was $1.549 at this point a year ago. Crude oil prices well below those found last fall as well as mild temperatures are major contributors to the lower gas prices.
