R.I. Head Start programs to receive more than $480,000

South County Community Action in Peacedale and Self Help, Inc. in Riverside have been awarded $264,000 and $221,000, respectively, for the continuation of their Head Start programs.

Head Start, which was begun in 1965, is a comprehensive child development program that aims to increase the school readiness of young children in low-income families. It is administered by the Head Start Bureau, under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families (ACF). ACF regional offices award grants directly to public agencies, private organizations, Indian tribes and school systems so that they may operate the programs at the community level.
