PROVIDENCE — Major Richard T. Sullivan, a 25-year veteran and the senior ranking officer of the Providence Police Department, has been chosen to lead the department as its next colonel, effective February 1.
Colonel Urbano Prigano, Jr., the department’s chief executive since October 1995, has decided to retire on January 31, following what has been a tumultuous year in which the department has faced much criticism.

Colonel-designate Sullivan will have the full authority of the chief of police during the selection process for a new chief, said Providence Mayor Vincent A. Cianci, Jr. Sullivan is among the candidates for the chief of police post, Cianci said.
Sullivan was appointed to the Providence Police Department in 1976 at the age of 24. He began his career in the Patrol Bureau and served on the Traffic Bureau and the Terrorist/Extremist Team, becoming major of the Traffic Bureau in 1995. He is the recipient of the Department Ribbon, the police department’s highest honor for outstanding police work, and has been awarded the Silver Star of Bravery from the American Law Enforcement Officers Association. He is also a recipient of the Attorney General’s Law Enforcement Award.
