Romney vetoes $201M from budget

The budget, which was the first to be signed by July 1 in the
last seven years, eliminates the deficit by raising $400 million
in fees and $400 million in one-time revenue and by cutting
spending across state government including health-care services.

The Democrat-controlled Legislature will take votes next week on
overriding some of the vetoes.

“We are pleased that the governor has embraced many reforms
that the Legislature proposed,” Sen. President Robert
Travaglini and House Speaker Thomas Finneran said in a joint
statement. “Many of his vetoes, however, needlessly make a
painful budget more painful.”

Romney made a total of 372 vetoes, which include action taken
on so-called outside budget sections and re-wording line item
expenditure plans, according to Romney spokeswoman Shawn Feddeman.

The largest spending cut was $23 million of a $333 million
local aid account known as “additional assistance” that goes to
certain cities and towns. Romney has said the plan doesn’t benefit
the neediest communities as intended.

The governor also vetoed the legislators’ proposals to expand
the state’s Boston court district and the Massachusetts Turnpike
Authority, two entities Romney had proposed to eliminate as part
of his efforts to reorganize state government.
