PROVIDENCE — Beginning today, the State of Rhode Island begin its annual Ozone Alert Program — a combined effort of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA), the Department of Environmental Management (DEM), the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Health.
The program, which is federally funded through the Congestion Mitigation Air Quality Act and which runs through the end of the summer, encourages Rhode Islanders to reduce air pollutant emissions by limiting car travel and the use of small engines, lawn mowers and charcoal lighter fluids.

As part of the program, RIPTA will provide free service on all of its regular routes (excluding special services such as the Beach Bus Express and the water ferry) during DEM-designated “Ozone Alert Days” — days on which ozone levels and air quality reach unhealthy levels.
