GROTON, CONN. — Among the new degree programs to be offered by Rhode Island schools this fall is a Master of Science Degree in Chemistry, offered by the University of Rhode Island (URI) at the Pfizer Central Research Facility in Groton, Conn.
Many of URI’s Chemistry graduates have accepted employment at Pfizer, and it is this informal connection that has, over the years, lead to research collaborations between the two entities, according to URI Professor of Chemistry and Coordinator of the Pfizer program, William Euler.

Pfizer Inc. discovers, develops, manufactures and markets medicines for humans and animals, operating two business segments: pharmaceuticals and consumer products. In 2000, the pharmaceuticals segment had eight products with sales in excess of $1 billion each, including Zoloft and Viagra.
The company has also donated lab equipment to the university’s chemistry department.
Pfizer employees enrolled in the program will earn a degree identical to that of the non-thesis master’s at Kingston, said Euler. URI will offer one class each fall semester and one each spring at the plant, which employs 5,500.
The degree program at the Pfizer facility will be restricted to 25 employees at a time.
URI has offered classes at Pfizer since 1995.
