URI program offers German immersion

The University of Rhode Island is seeking applicants for its 27th annual German Summer School of the Atlantic, which provides a full immersion in German language and culture right on the Kingston campus – for three weeks or six weeks.
“It’s ideal for adult learners from all walks of life who are seeking proficiency in German, from upper-level high school students to senior citizens,” said Norbert Hedderich, a URI professor of German and director of the program, in a news release.
“Some past participants were preparing to study or work abroad,” he added. “Others were German teachers here to strengthen their skills, and all share an interest in German and the culture of the German-speaking countries.”
The program offers opportunities for students of all levels – from beginners to graduate students – and all core courses focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing. Intermediate and advanced students can also take the certification exams from the Goethe Institute.
In addition to coursework, the program includes workshops on theater, music and current events, among other activities. German films are regularly screened, and German news broadcasts are received daily via satellite.
Participants and faculty live and eat together in a German-only environment in the building that houses URI’s International Engineering Program.
The program will run from June 24 to Aug. 3 in cooperation with the Goethe Institute and the German government, with support from the Max Kade Foundation.
