Verizon and its unions, the Communications Workers of
America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers,
have been negotiating in Washington with Hurtgen since July 29,
seeking to avoid a strike that could cause phone-repair and
installation delays. The talks have focused on job security
issues and health care costs.
CWA spokeswoman Candice Johnson declined to comment on the
mediator’s statement. Officials at the IBEW didn’t immediately
respond to requests for comment. Verizon spokesman Peter Thonis
declined to comment.

Union officials decided to not call a strike after contracts
expired last Saturday night.

In the North Carolina strike, union workers won a pension
boost of 4 percent, improvements in health care coverage and a 12
percent wage increase over the three-year contract.
