WASHINGTON– Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc, bid $8.77 billion for 113 licenses during the Federal Communication Commission’s auction of airwaves to wireless service companies.
Verizon Wireless led the auction, followed by Alaskan Native Wireless ($2.89 billion for 44 licenses) and Cingular Wireless ($2.35 billion for 80 licenses), according to reports.

Bids reached a record $16.85 billion after 94 rounds, with only two new high bids placed in the last round Thursday, reports said. Four hundred and twenty-two licenses are up for sale to fill gaps in coverage and begin new service in markets ranging from Paris, Texas to New York City.
