Washington Trust CEO at home after heart surgery

After a successful coronary bypass surgery last Friday, The Washington Trust Co. CEO John C. Warren was released from an undisclosed hospital Wednesday and is now recovering at his home in Narragansett, said a spokeswoman for the Westerly-based bank.

Elizabeth B. Eckel, senior vice president of marketing at Washington Trust, said there is no time line on when the bank’s longtime chief executive will return to work.

The bank’s board of directors last week appointed John F. Treanor, president and chief operating officer, to assume Warren’s duties during the CEO’s recovery.

“[Warren] is obviously doing what needs to be done to recuperate,” Eckel said in an interview Thursday morning. “He’s in really good spirits [and is] up walking around.”

Warren called the bank Wednesday and informed his colleagues that he had returned home, said Eckel, indicating that his physician’s opinion more than anything would determine when he returns to work.

“It’s more, probably, the doctor’s call,” she said.

Warren, 61, joined Washington Trust in 1996 as president and chief operating officer. He has served as CEO since he was promoted to the top post in 1997. In 1999, he was appointed chairman of the board.

Washington Trust Bancorp Inc., the parent company of Washington Trust, is the largest independent bank in Rhode Island with $3.4 billion in assets as of March 31.
