Why do we expect companies to be a substitute mommy and daddy for employees?

I agree with The Wall Street Journal: Companies should not provide health insurance. Put the insurance premium money in the employees’ paychecks and let them get the type and amount of insurance they want. It avoids a lot of unnecessary time and expense to the company and gives the employee more choice.

And what’s with this growing practice of employers providing healthy-living counseling?
How pathetic is it that employers have to explain to adult employees that it is unhealthy to be fat, that substance abuse is harmful, that exercise is a good idea? I’m afraid to look up the term “personal responsibility,” for fear it no longer exists.

With all the employee benefits, all the sensitivity training and all the community relations expected of companies, it is amazing they have time to produce a product or service.
