PROVIDENCE — The Providence Public Library system and CLAN (the Cooperating Library
Automated Network) are connecting with OSHEAN (the Ocean State Higher Education,
Economic Development and Administrative Network) — and replacing outdated hardware
(56K lines) with the high–speed (T1) lines, making Rhode Island among the first
in the nation to have virtually all its public libraries and their statewide patrons
teleconnected.
“No longer are the computer connections adequate for what libraries and their patrons need,” said Peter Bennett, technology director at the Providence Public Library. “There is a demand for more PCs, quicker access to the Web and more graphics online. Existing 56K lines simply cannot fulfill that need In effect, we are replacing small pipes with big pipes.”
