He’s been to the depths of the seas in a nuclear-powered submarine and climbed to the top management rungs of one of the world’s largest property insurance companies. Through all his varied work experience, Cumberland’s John Busavage has been driven to succeed.
After graduating Villanova University in 1992, he joined the U.S. Navy, loosely following in the footsteps of his father, John, a 26-year Coast Guard veteran.
He spent six years in the Navy, serving as an officer on a nuclear-powered submarine and rising to the rank of lieutenant. In 1996, he became director of nuclear training for the Naval Submarine School.
Busavage left the Navy in 1998 for a consulting position with Duke Engineering and Services, where he worked as a business analyst on projects that included Y2K assessment and planning.
Two years after completing his MBA in 1999, he became a senior project manager at FM Global.
As an early adopter of “.Net” technology, he helped re-engineer the company’s insurance systems, working closely with Microsoft to test and use new technology.
In 2007, Busavage was named manager of FM Global’s Client e-Business Systems team.
Drawing on his experience, including time in the Navy he says “prepared me for taking a look at every situation on its own” and forging ahead, he led a team that developed a suite of IT applications that allow the company to interact more easily with customers.
His track record as a problem solver earned a recent promotion to assistant vice president, manager for Client e-Business Systems group. •
