R.I.’s CollegeBound fund eclipses $3 billion

PROVIDENCE – The state of Rhode Island’s CollegeBound fund, the Section 529 college-savings plan, has reached more than $3 billion in assets under management for the first time since its inception in November 2000, state officials recently announced.

Gen. Treasurer Paul J. Tavares said in a news release that Rhode Island has the largest 529 plan in the country. The plan, which is managed by Alliance Capital Management LP and administered by the R.I. Higher Education Assistance Authority, has seen its in-state assets multiply by more than eightfold to $70 million since 2000.

The tax-advantaged CollegeBound fund allows participants to invest as little as $1 per month toward their child’s education and offers special benefits to residents of its home state, including low fees and a state tax deduction on up to $1,000 in contributions annually.
