Heartlab Inc. co-founder Jon Elion, MD recently placed into the public domain computer code and databases to help manufacturers of cardiac date collection equipment implement DICOM Structured Reporting (SR). DICOM SR creates an international standard for the exchange of non-image data among vendors’ cardiac equipment in the same way that the DICOM standard enables medical image data from one vendor’s system to be imported into another vendor’s system. In fact, Elion implemented and put into the public domain the first-ever reference CD-R with X-ray images in DICOM format in 1994.
Elion, a cardiologist and computer scientist, is the American College of Cardiology’s representative on the DICOM committee, a group formed by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association and the American College of Cardiology to find a way to interchange digital information and prevent manufacturers from creating digital information “silos.”
