Rhode Island State Senator Elizabeth H. Roberts and State Representative Thomas C. Slater were recently recognized as the 2000-2001 Legislators of the Year by the United Way of Southeastern New England. The Awards are given annually to a state senator and state representative who have demonstrated a commitment to human service issues and to helping people help themselves. Among Senator Roberts’ contributions are sponsorship of legislation that has begun to provide health care coverage to uninsured, low income adults; Representative Slater has co-sponsored bills on issues such as helmet requirements, school and bridge maintenance, local health regulations, abused and neglected children, and the confidentiality of health care records.
