Plans for development of some 150 acres along East Providence’s waterfront is encouraging, an example that all revitalization doesn’t necessarily begin in Providence.
This is an ambitious project that the city hopes will eventually generate 3,000 new jobs and reclaim some former industrial land, much of it now characterized as brownfields, for retail, commercial and residential space.

Probably most encouraging is that the city is looking forward, developing a plan that it expects will be consistent with the city’s character and the people who live in East Providence.
“We have got to look to the future of what kind of economy this city is going to have,” said City Manager Paul Lemont. “To the type of people who we will be serving and what kinds of jobs they will want.”
Much of the land along the waterfront in both East Providence and Providence has been a collection of ugly oil tanks and heavy industry, under-utilizing what could become extremely valuable and desirable property. Providence Mayor Vincent Cianci, Jr. many months ago unveiled his plans for his city’s waterfront.
We can only imagine how spectacular this area could become if both these efforts unfold over the next decade, revitalizing tired waterfronts into vibrant and exciting areas in which to live and work.
