PROVIDENCE – Dr. Ilse Jenouri has been named the 2018 Charles C. J. Carpenter, M.D., Outstanding Physician of the Year at The Miriam Hospital.
Jenouri has served as the medical director of Miriam’s emergency department since her appointment to the position in July 2017. She was presented the award at the annual meeting of the Miriam Hospital Medical Staff Association, held at Miriam Hospital June 14.
The Miriam Hospital Medical Staff Association sponsors the award, which is described as “the highest recognition that can be given to a member of our medical staff.” The award recognizes physicians for their contributions to medicine, leadership, professionalism and patient care. Winners are nominated by their peers.
Dr. Alex Kearney, one of several physicians to nominate Jenouri, wrote that she has “been a champion for both patient care and physician/employee wellness. She is always working to make sure that patients are getting the best care possible and that physicians feel supported.”
“Dr. Jenouri has been a dynamic leader, keeping a positive attitude and supporting her colleagues, staff and advocating for patients,” wrote colleague Dr. Andrew Musits. “The new clinical decision unit has also opened under her leadership, allowing for a new avenue to better care for patients.”
Dr. Victoria Leytin, added, “She assumed the leadership position with competence and grace. On a near-daily basis, she is found walking the department, problem-solving and making sure that all is running as smoothly as possible.”
Jenouri completed her residency in emergency medicine with the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and joined the medical staff of Miriam Hospital in 2002 as an attending physician. She served as the associate medical director of the emergency department for six years.
In 2018 and 2017, Jenouri was recognized as a “Top Doc” for emergency medicine by Rhode Island Monthly magazine. University Emergency Medicine Foundation presented her an “outstanding physician” award in 2013. In 2009, she was a recipient of a teaching recognition award from the Warren Alpert Medical School, where she is a clinical associate professor.
Jenouri is a graduate of the State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine and completed her residency in emergency medicine with the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
The award is named after Dr. Charles Carpenter, who served as Miriam’s physician-in-chief from 1986 to 1998 and became a leader in responding to the HIV/AIDS epidemic by establishing the hospital’s Immunology Center. He has served as director of the Lifespan/Tufts/Brown Center for AIDS Research and as a professor of medicine at Brown. He achieved widespread recognition for his work in treating diseases in developing countries and for training a generation of researchers in the field of international health.
