The Massachusetts attorney general said he would not support the federal government’s antitrust settlement with Microsoft Corp. because the deal will allow the software giant to crush its competitors, the Boston Globe newspaper reported.
Attorney General Tom Reilly, whose state has a large base of technology companies, said major changes would be needed before he would sign onto the settlement, the newspaper reported.

“There’s no question in my mind that Microsoft will use this agreement to crush competition, and they would have the imprimatur of the U.S. government to do it,” Reilly was quoted as saying.
Reilly and the attorneys general of 17 other states have until Tuesday to decide whether to join the settlement, which imposes restrictions on Microsoft’s business practices but imposes no harsh penalties on the company.
