RIPTA gets funds for new buses

WASHINGTON — The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority has been awarded more
than $5 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to replace old busses,
buy new ones and improve RPTA service. Some $3,961,000 will be used to purchase
13 new 40-foot replacement buses, four new 26-foot expansion buses and four Compressed
Natural Gas trolley replicas. RIPTA will use the remaining $1,097,000 to continue
its expanded fixed route and reverse commute services to low income individuals
throughout the state, according to the office of U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, D-RI.
