Union, Shaw’s agree on contract

WEST BRIDGEWATER — After an intense series of negotiations, a union representing
7,000 employees at 38 Shaw’s Supermarkets in Massachusetts and Rhode Island reached
agreement with management representatives on a three-year contract. The agreement
averts a strike that had been authorized by the employees. The parties also reached
agreement on a severance package for workers at the East Bridgewater Distribution
Center that Shaw’s announced it would close in October. Shaw’s operates 185 Shaw’s
and Star markets throughout New England. A contract for a distribution center
in Wells, Maine was tentatively approved on July 29.
