While plans apparently continue on track for the Travelers Aid Society to relocate its operations from Union Street downtown to the Providence YMCA on Broad Street — the Y is moving forward with efforts to move out of the Broad Street building to the South Side, possibly to the former Gorham Manufacturing plant.
The city has been working to clean up the deteriorated — and environmentally damaged 37-acre site. Now, after several years and millions of federal and state dollars, the clean up of the area is nearly complete.

The site is positioned between Adelaide Avenue and Mashapaug Pond.
We are looking at several sites on the South Side to build a new YMCA, and the Gorham site is one of them,” said Susan Rittscher, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Providence YMCA.
The Greater Providence YMCA owns the building on Broad Street.
“We have discussed several scenarios with the city,” she said.
The proposed move is part of the YMCA’s five-year, $10 million capital campaign. And that is just the beginning. Overall, said Rittscher, the organization will come up with $30 million of plans and needs in the next 10 years.
Rittscher said she hopes a new YMCA will be built an in full operation sometime in 2004.
