A national expert suggests that airport travel will double over the next 15
years, putting more pressure and creating more opportunities for secondary airports,
like Rhode Island’s T.F. Green.
Green Airport has been experiencing phenomenal growth since the arrival of Southwest
Airlines and since the rebuilding of the terminal into a first class facility.
Not that many years ago, the number of passengers traveling through the airport
in any particular month would be less than 100,000. Now in this past October
alone it was more than 500,000.

The rejuvenated Green Airport has had a profound impact on our business community,
on tourism, and on the state’s overall economy.
All great news. However, controversy surrounds the airport now. With talk of
expansion, there is concern from its host community, Warwick, that an increase
in air traffic will only increase the noise level for many of Warwick’s neighborhoods.
It’s a legitimate concern, but the reality is the airport will not move, and
that its expansion is important to the overall growth of Rhode Island.
But we remain sympathetic to the Warwick residents. There may be a number of
ways to reduce the noise levels.
We suspect and hope that this issue will become a priority for lawmakers on
a city, state and federal level, so that expansion of the airport can proceed
with as little disruption to the residents of Warwick.
