EAST PROVIDENCE – In celebration of St. Mary Academy Bay View’s S.M.A.R.T. 2.0 robotics team’s third-place finish at the internationally attended FIRST LEGO League World Championship competition, its members met with Gov. Gina M. Raimondo and Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, on May 22.

Held in St. Louis from April 26-29, the FLL competition saw the East Providence students beat 108 teams from 33 countries and be awarded the Inspiration in the Core Values award, which recognizes teams displaying extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit.

The students recognized by the governor included: Lucy Bosch of Providence; Wren Hager of Bristol; Isabella Heffernan of Warwick; Margaret Mahoney of East Providence; Maeve Martineau of Warwick; Eva Matos of Providence; Gabriella Osorio-Palo of Cranston; Ainsley Pattie of Warren; Daria Smuk of Smithfield; and Ava Troino of East Providence.

The winning project championed by the team enhanced GPS for blind individuals by designing a seeing-eye-dog vest, which tells them which direction to turn via signals from sensors on the left, right and back of the apparatus.
