BOSTON, Mass. (INTERNET WIRE) — In an initiative that it said it hopes will help close the technology gap and create greater access to financial services and the Internet for individuals and businesses in low- and moderate-income communities, FleetBoston Financial has launched CommunityLink, a program designed to offer computers and computer training to lower income people.
Fleet said it will introduce CommunityLink as a prototype program in two neighborhoods in the first quarter of 2001 — in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood of Dudley Square and in the Ironbound section of Newark, N.J. Later in the year, three neighborhoods will be added, including the Northeast section of Trenton, N.J., and in the Boston neighborhoods of Grove Hall and Uphams Corner. Initially, 3,000 Fleet customer participants, including individuals and small business owners, will receive computers and online services at no cost.

The prototype, which began as a multi-million dollar corporate commitment including a grant from the Fleet Foundation, is funded entirely by FleetBoston Financial. The company’s ultimate goal is to expand its customer base by attracting emerging-market customers, it said.
