PROVIDENCE – DuPont Co., Sherwin-Williams Co. and four other former lead-paint makers will go on trial again in Rhode Island next year over the state’s claims that their products created a public-health threat, a judge ruled earlier this month.
Superior Court Judge Michael Silverstein in Providence set an April 5, 2004, trial date for the state’s public-nuisance claims that the paint, used on homes, schools and public buildings, harms children. The first trial ended in a hung jury in last November.
The state filed suit in 1999 under then-Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse to force the companies to pay for removing lead paint, which scientists have linked to brain damage. Last year, the Legislature passed a bill that holds property owners responsible for the presence of lead paint in homes.
Fatima opens breast-care center
NORTH PROVIDENCE – Our Lady of Fatima Hospital earlier this month celebrated the opening of an integrated center for the diagnosis and early treatment of breast cancer.
The Alice Viola Breast Care Center is set within the hospital’s new Bishop Louis E. Gelineau Surgical Pavilion; its inpatient surgical center opened in 2001. Viola, a businesswoman, author and North Providence resident, is an 18-year breast-cancer survivor.
Hospital officials say the center offers the most advanced technology for breast cancer screening in Rhode Island, including the state’s first CADx (Computer Assisted Detection), which allows radiologists to screen mammogram films digitally. The technology improves early breast-cancer diagnosis by as much as 23 percent, the hospital said.
The 2,900-square-foot center also offers mammography, biopsy and surgical and radiology consultations. The integration of service eliminates the need for women to make multiple trips to different doctors’ offices while decreasing the lead-time from screening to diagnosis and intervention, officials said.
Rhode Island’s breast-care incidence rate is the fourth highest in the nation, and the mortality rate is second highest.
