When Michele L. Caprio is asked to reflect on professional achievements, she has many to choose from.
As owner and broker at Center Place Realty, she redeveloped neglected properties and provided opportunities for low-income families to achieve own homes.
She has developed an expertise in representing clients in pre-planning, planning and zoning phases of property development, and before municipal tax review committees. She has managed and marketed distressed or bank-owned properties for clients such as Citizens Bank, Fannie Mae and Rhode Island Housing. And as vice president of AMC Appraisal Company, she has researched and upgraded computer software to ensure competitiveness in the market.
She also has become a leader in her profession, serving as the 2003 president of the Greater Providence Board of Realtors and the 2006 president of the Rhode Island Association of Realtors. Being named CEO of the Greater Providence board recently, she says, is her most significant achievement to date.
“I was selected among highly qualified candidates to bring this 1,900-member association to the next level,” she wrote in her 40 Under Forty application.
As CEO, she manages daily business, develops new leadership talent, coordinates all volunteer activities, and handles fundraising, public affairs and governmental relations. She is also implementing key factors of a three-year strategic plan with “an aggressive technology component.”
She hopes to live up to retired CEO, Sharon R. Kersh, with whom she worked for 12 years. “Through this experience, I could always look to Sharon, a consummate professional, for her guidance and sage advice,” Caprio said.
And she is well on her way. Caprio was chair of the Realtors Political Action Committee in 2002 and 2007, and selected as federal political coordinator to U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy.
She received the Lear Award in 1999 and 2004 – the highest honor the Greater Providence Board of Realtors offers for professional and community involvement. She was also honored with the 2006 Omega Tau Rho Award for distinguished service to the National Association of Realtors.
