Rhode Island Hospital has developed a multiple sclerosis (MS) center as a result of a recent affiliation with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the hospital announced in a release Friday. Through this affiliation, the Rhode Island Hospital MS Center will now work directly with the National MS Society to provide enhanced health care, educational programs and community services to individuals with multiple sclerosis.
Rhode Island Hospital is the only NMSS-affiliated hospital in the area to participate in clinical trials and the second hospital in the state to develop this formal partnership. Following a review of the clinical and referral services available through the hospital, the affiliation was approved by the NMSS local chapter’s clinical advisory committee.

“This designation shows that we have the ability to provide superior care in a multi-disciplinary approach to the more than 700 MS patients we see each year,” said Syed Rizvi, MD, director of the new MS center and a neurologist with the Rhode Island Hospital Neurology Foundation. “We now have a partnership with the National MS Society that will allow us to provide additional services and a better quality of life to those with multiple sclerosis.”
Rizvi is also the principal investigator for several trials currently being held locally, nationally and internationally. The trials aim to improve treatments for people suffering from MS. Rizvi, who largely led establishing the affiliation, recently received an award in recognition of his efforts to establish the Rhode Island Hospital MS Center during the annual meeting of the local chapter of the National MS Society.
