TJX’s March same-store sales decrease 1 percent, company lowers first quarter earnings expectations

FRAMINGHAM, MASS. — The TJX Companies, owner of off-price retail stores T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, A.J. Wright, Winners, and T.K Maxx, said consolidated comparable store sales — meaning sales for stores open for at least one entire fiscal year — for March decreased one percent from the same period last year. However, total store sales increased 7 percent over last year.

Consolidated comparable store sales figures were not available. Total sales at TJX stores for the five weeks ended April 8, 2001 reached $890 million, compared to $835 million during the same period a year ago.

TJX has slightly reduced its first quarter earnings estimates, from 44 cents to 43 cents per share. The company plans to release first quarter results on Tuesday, May 15.
