WARWICK, R.I. — The Rhode Island Emissions and Safety Testing Program has released its emissions figures for 2000, representing some 550,000 cars and light trucks inspected during the first year of the program.
Eighty-five percent of tested vehicles passed inspection. Of the 15 percent that failed, 7 percent failed for emissions problems, 10 percent failed for safety violations, and some failed for both reasons.

For the vehicles that were tested for all three emission pollutants (hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides), and failed for emissions, 50 percent failed due to nitrogen oxides, 43 percent failed due to carbon monoxide, and 25 percent failed due to hydrocarbons.
The program also reported that there are now 291 official inspection stations, and 1,172 certified inspection technicians qualified to inspect vehicles for both safety and emissions. For information on locating official inspection stations, visit www.riinspection.com.
