Welcome to this, Providence Business News’ ninth celebration of the winners of our annual Business Excellence Awards. This year we have added a wrinkle to this, one of our most difficult – and energizing – tasks of the year. In addition to our traditional individual and company recognition categories (the table of contents with all the winners is on Page 4), we have created an award for corporate citizenship. Rhode Island is filled with business leaders who give significant amounts of their time to the communities in which they live and in which their companies have operations. They don’t ask for the recognition, but we felt that it was time they received it anyway. Our first honoree is William F. Hatfield, Bank of America’s Rhode Island market president. His long list of philanthropic activities is a testament to his commitment to the community. And it’s the same commitment he brings to work in his day job.
As is always the case, the judging process for all the awards is a time-intensive one, and we are fortunate that so many of the region’s most accomplished people volunteer to do it. I want to thank them heartily for their efforts (they are listed on Page 4 as well).
The Business Excellence Awards competition and event are made possible every year by our generous sponsors, and this year is no exception. The presenting sponsor is Bank Rhode Island. Our partners are Bryant University, Cox Business, Lefkowitz, Garfinkel, Champi & DeRienzo P.C. (LGC&D), Partridge Snow & Hahn and USI Insurance. Joining us as media sponsor this year is AM790. The awards ceremony was held Nov. 12 at the Providence Marriott Downtown.

Sincerely,
Roger C. Bergenheim
